Two men arrested following separate robberies at two different bookmakers

Staff at a local bookmakers were threatened with a knife during a robbery at their shop on Saturday afternoon.

An armed man entered the shop alone in Baylough in Athlone shortly after 3.30pm.

He threatened staff with a knife, took an amount of cash and fled the scene in a car.

No one was injured during the incident.

During a follow up operation, a 38-year-old man was arrested a short time later. 

A car and a quantity of cash was recovered.

The man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Athlone Garda Station.

The investigation is on-going.

In a separate bookmakers shop robbery in Mayo, a man threatened a staff member before leaving the scene on foot with a sum of money.

The robbery took place at a shop on Castle Street shortly after 9pm.

No one was injured during the incident.

Gardai arrested a 28-year-old man during a follow up operation a short time later, and a sum of cash was recovered.

The man is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Castlebar Garda Station.

Investigations are also ongoing in this case.
