As the balloons drifted into the night sky, mourners silently remembered the 10 people who had died in the Carrickmines fire.

Fr Derek Farrell, of the Parish of the Travelling People, led a prayer vigil for the local community following the fire at the halting site early last Saturday morning.

He said it was important to see the public "sharing in the sense of solidarity and expressing support for the Lynch, Connors and Gilbert families".

At the vigil were Bridget (20) and Ann (23) Cawley from Tallaght, who were first cousins of those who died. They said they were still in shock over the deaths of their relatives.

Actor Michael Collins (49) who has appeared in 'King of the Travellers' and 'Glenroe' was also there. He said: "It was a tragedy to happen to any community. It's great to see the Traveller and the settled people out supporting each other."
