Tragedy as boy (13) drowns in river after 'trying to save friend'

A 13-year-old boy has drowned following an incident in a river this evening.

The tragedy occurred at approximately 4pm today along the Lyreen River close to the Kilcock Road in Maynooth, Co Kildare as the teenager walked with friends near the bank.

The three teenagers were walking by the Lyreen when it is believed one of the group fell in.

It is believed that the drowned boy had been trying to save his friend after he got into difficulty.

His friends managed to raise the alarm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and brought the boy to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.

However, the 13-year-old boy passed away some time later.

Gardai have launched a full investigation but are said to be treating the incident as a tragic accident.

A post-mortem is expected to be conducted tomorrow.
