Three people were taken hostage by a tiger kidnap gang who forced them from their home and held them captive in a nearby disused quarry.

Gardai believe at least four gang members were involved in the incident and were armed with handguns.

Three of the gang forced their way into a house at Lehery in Crosserlough, near Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, at about 2am yesterday.

They tied up two men and a woman, including the owner of a premises in Ballyjamesduff, and took them from the house to a quarry. An elderly man, who was sleeping upstairs, was not disturbed by the raiders.

The gang then drove the shop owner to the town and ordered him at gunpoint to open the safe in his premises.

They made off with what gardai described as a substantial amount of cash, believed to be in the region of €5,000.

After the gang had made their getaway the victims managed to free themselves and raised the alarm.

An examination of the shop, quarry and house was carried out and gardai were last night looking at footage taken from CCTV cameras in the area.
