Three prison officers are being treated in hospital after a savage blade attack in Mountjoy Prison.

The three wardens were attacked when they unlocked a specialist cell at 815am this morning.

It is understood that the attacker had been held overnight in the challenging behaviour unit (CBU) for an incident yesterday in which he spat at a nurse.

The inmate is currently serving four years for aggravated assault and is due to be released in 2017.

He has some 150 disciplinary reports against him in the prison.

The CBU is utilised as a punishment when inmates are in breach of prison rules.

According to prison sources, the man used razor blades to attack the officers who suffered stab wounds to the face and head.

They were then rushed to the Mater Hospital where they are currently being treated for their injuries.

More to follow.
