Three men savagely assaulted two gardai - one female - in early morning attack
Two gardai were savagely attacked in Co Mayo in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The officers, one female, were set upon at Kilcolman Road in Claremorris after responding to an earlier incident in the area.
While out on mobile patrol, the two officers stopped a group of youths around 4.30am and were assaulted.
The male garda was the most seriously injured and was treated in Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar.
He was later released but is understood to be receiving ongoing medical treatment.
A spokesman for the Mayo Garda Division said that the attacks were particularly serious and prolonged.
He added that three men had set upon the male officer and that the attack had continued on the main road.
Mayo County Councillor Tom Connolly, who lives in Claremorris, said he was deeply shocked to hear the local gardai were brutally assaulted while carrying out their duties.
“It’s very rare,” he said of gardai being attacked in such a manner.
“It’s very shocking. It’s nothing we want to see in Claremorris or in any other small town,” he told Independent.ie.
While he doesn’t know what sparked the assault, he said the incident took place on the main road of the town that is flanked by two local housing estates.
Three male suspects (aged 18, 21, and 22) were later arrested and brought to Castlebar and Westport garda stations where they are being held under Section of 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Claremorris garda station or the Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666 111.
