Three lobster fishermen had to be airlifted to safety after their vessel sunk in the Irish Sea.

The operation was co-ordinated by Marine Rescue coordination who received an emergency alert around 2.15pm this afternoon.

The Dublin coastguard helicopter was tasked as well as Wicklow lifeboat.

The rescue operation was able to pinpoint the precise location of the fishermen, who had bailed out in a lifeboat, through their emergency indicting beacon.

The men were picked up around six miles out at sea between Bray Head and Wicklow Head.

They were airlifted to Tallaght Hospital.

A coastguard spokesperson said the men were suffering from hypothermia.
