Thousands of students who have experienced delays in receipt of annual bus tickets will be issued temporary passes until the issue is resolved.

Bus Eireann have acknowledged the problem, which is understood to be connected to the implementation of a new computer system.

Approximately 115,000 students from the primary and secondary sector use these annual bus tickets.

Previously, these could be collected at local bus offices.

However, due to the computer system changeover, thousands of purchased tickets have yet to be issued or are still in the post.

As pupils countrywide begin to return to school this week, many parents have reported that their travel ticket – which can cost up to €650 – has not yet arrived.

Bus Eireann have said that evidence of payment will be acceptable for students travelling to school until their annual ticket arrives.

Temporary tickets are also being issued via email that can be accepted on buses this week.
