It took seven years of planning and fundraising, but yesterday Westport Town Hall Theatre officially reopened.
The new €3m town hall and cultural centre has been described as a "major boost" for the Co Mayo town.
The centre, which was closed in 2008, reopened its doors to the public after almost €1m was collected locally.
Tourism and Sport Minister Michael Ring said that the revamped centre will attract new visitors to the town.
"It is a major boost for Westport and comes as a result of a partnership between the local authority, Fáilte Ireland and rural support initiatives as well as a major effort from the community," Mr Ring said.
The community group behind the project was chaired by Noel Kavanagh of the SuperValu Group.
