It is understood that a weapon was produced by the man during the incident in Dungloe yesterday afternoon.

The boy was not physically injured during the incident but was left shaken by it.

Schools in the town last night issued text message alerts to parents warning them not to allow pupils to walk alone to or from school.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí are investigating an incident in which a 12-yr old boy alleges he was approached by a man in a suspicious manner on Quay Rd Dungloe, Co Donegal at approx. 3pm on 10th Nov 2016.

“Gardaí are appealing for information. The boy was not injured in the incident.”

Parents in the area have expressed their fears after the confrontation.

Detectives will speak to the boy again today about his ordeal.

The school alert text reads “Due to an incident which occurred after school today for safety reasons we ask parents to drop and collect children from school. Children should not walk home alone.”
