Several homes in Crumlin had to be evacuated in the early hours of this morning after a suspected pipe bomb was found under a car.

The incident unfolded shortly after 1.30am when a member of the public spotted the device under the vehicle on Parnell Road.

Gardai immediately sealed off the area and the army bomb squad were called to examine the device which looked to be authentic.

It was made up from a metal pipe with wires and a timer visible from it.

After examination the device was deemed to be an elaborate hoax.

The incident is not believed to be connected in any way with the ongoing tensions in Crumlin and the south inner city after the murders of David Byrne in the Regency Hotel last Friday and Eddie Hutch in Ballybough on Monday.
