A MODEST hero prevented one teacher's work night out turning into a disaster after chasing after a thief who had just snatched her bag.

Kate Tierney (22), of St Colmcille's National School in Knocklyon in Dublin, was enjoying an evening out with colleagues following the end of the school term in Dublin's city centre last night when a thief snatched Ms Tierney's handbag and sprinted off.

But a man who had been working nearby chased after the thief.

"He was about 10 metres ahead of him when he chased after him so I had given up on seeing that bag again," she told the Irish Independent.

Less than 10 minutes after the robber had disappeared, the man, who did not wish to be identified, returned with the bag and all its contents intact. "I couldn't believe it. I had given up on ever seeing it again," Kate said.

"Then I just heard from across the street that he had got it back. What a hero. I wanted him to come in for a drink to say thanks very much but he said he had to work."
