Waterways Ireland has warned against swimming in operating docks, harbours and marinas following a number of near misses between boats and swimmers in recent days.
Citing the high number of boats using the Shannon, Barrow and Erne in particular, Waterways Ireland said safe navigation of harbours, docks and marinas is "near impossible" when swimmers are in the water.
According to Waterways Ireland's Eanna Rowe, swimming in these areas is prohibited and there were "a couple of near misses in a number of different harbours right along the navigations" in recent days.
"Those wishing to cool down in this hot balmy weather should go to the designated local authority bathing areas and the dangerous practice of swimming at marinas and harbours should cease immediately," he advised.
