Blue skies and mini heatwaves are becoming a distant memory as rain clouds hang heavy on the horizon.

Thundery showers will spread across the country this afternoon, with highest temperatures reaching 16C to 19C.

"There will be heavy rainfall in the morning and afternoon," Met Éireann forecaster David Rodgers said. "But the rain should ease by the evening."

Tomorrow will prove to be another damp and dreary day.

Scattered showers and blustery winds will whip around northern and western parts of the country.

"It will be cool and breezy for the majority of the week," Mr Rodgers said.

"There will be bouts of heavy rain and fresh breezes. I think we've definitely seen the back of the heatwave."

Thankfully, Wednesday will be drier, with only a handful of isolated showers around the country.

"There will be some sunny spells in south-western areas," said Mr Rodgers.

But grey skies will return on Thursday, with top temperatures of 21C making for a humid day.
