Over €1 million worth of tobacco was seized by Revenue Officers on Monday morning.

Officers at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford discovered more than two tonnes of tobacco when they stopped and searched a Polish-registered truck that was arriving from Cherbourg in France.

The truck, which is understood to have contained plastic, was stopped and searched as part of a routine operation with the help of Detector Dog Alfie.

The driver, a man aged in his 40s, was questioned and his vehicle and the illegal tobacco were seized.

Investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecute.

The black market tobacco has a retail value of over €1 million and represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €800,000.

Anyone who has any information about the smuggling or sale of contraband tobacco is urged to contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
