SEVEN young girls have been rescued after getting into trouble in the Mourne Mountains in Co Down.

A coastguard helicopter from Dublin was dispatched to assist in the rescue effort at around 5.40pm this evening after the PSNI raised the alarm with the Dublin coast guard.

However it was stood down en route to the scene after the Mourne Mountain Rescue and the PSNI located and were able to assist the seven girls.

The PSNI said the girls had got into difficulty due to the weather conditions.

One of the girls was taken to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service as a precaution while the six others were said to be uninjured.
