Irish rockers The Saw Doctors have been forced to cancel a series of sold-out shows this week as their lead singer recovers from throat surgery.

For the first time in their 25-year-history, the Galway-based band was forced to cancel a series of gigs at Dublin’s Olympia theatre after singer Davy Carton, (57), underwent surgery to his vocal chords at Galway’s University Hospital last week after experiencing persistent hoarseness.

“It’s very not the Saw Doctors. We’ve never cancelled a show in 25 years,” band manager Ollie Jennings told The Irish Independent.“It’s just unfortunate. It’s not the way we do things,” he said.

Fortunately Davy, who is a life-long smoker, was given the all-clear for throat cancer,” he said.

“There’s no cancer or growth. They did a swab and it came back negative,” he told independent.ie.

However, the singer, whom he described as “the life and soul of the party” damaged his vocal chords after coming down with a cold and continuing to do a series of gigs in Scotland following a three-year hiatus.

“They were so keen, they just sang too many songs in two-and-a-half hour shows,” he said.

"Davy has been ordered to give up the fags and stop talking and singing," he added.

He is now undergoing speech therapy with specialists at the hospital to repair the damaged vocal chords.

“He is on the road to recovery,” he said. The band has re-scheduled this week’s shows for dates in March.

Fans who bought tickets for shows this Thursday, Friday and Saturday can use them for corresponding dates on Wednesday, March 11, Friday March 10 and Saturday March 11.

A full refund is also available if those dates don’t suit, according to promoters MCD, who said:“MCD wish Davy a speedy recovery and look forward to having the Saw Doctors back in the Olympia in March,”.
