A number of residents were evacuated from their homes earlier today following the discovery of an explosive device at a private residence.

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found at a property in the Tolka Valley Park area of Finglas, Dublin, before noon today.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team following a request from gardai.

A cordon was established and a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The EOD team arrived at the scene at 11.58am.

The device was made safe at the scene at 12.30pm without the need for a controlled explosion.

The IED was then removed to a secure military location for further examination where it was discovered to be viable.

Items of an evidential nature will handed over to gardai to assist them in their investigation.
