A criminal gang attempted to blow up an ATM in Celbridge in a failed attempt to steal cash.

An alarm on the cash machine at the Ulster Bank on the Main Street of the Co Kildare town activated at 4.20am.

The ATM was found to be scorched when gardaí arrived.

The incident is identical to an attempt to blow up the same machine on December 3 last year at 4.40am.

Weeks before that, on November 8, 2014, a number of men attempted to break into the ATM but again failed.

Gardaí are now investigating if the same gang could be responsible.
