A priest was taken to hospital after he was assaulted in a church on Thursday night.

Fr Manuel Karipott, who is in his 40s, was set upon by a number of men at the White Abbey in Kildare town.

Fr Karipott suffered injuries to his eye and mouth and was brought to Naas General Hospital where he was treated.

The innocent priest was later released and a worker at the Carmelite Friary in Co Kildare, where Fr Karipott is based, confirmed he is recovering well.

"He is resting at the moment," she said when contacted this evening. "There was nothing serious. he just would like to thank everybody for their support."

A garda spokesman confirmed that they were called to the incident on Green Road at 10.15pm.

"A man in his 40s received minor injuries. No arrests were made"

Independent.ie has learned that the victim's phone was lost during the attack and has not been recovered.

Fr Karipott was unavailable for comment this evening.
