Murder investigation launched after man's body discovered in city apartment

A murder investigation has been launched after a man's body was discovered in an apartment yesterday morning.

Gardaí investigating the suspicious death at the apartment on Wellington St, Waterford upgraded their probe to a murder enquiry this morning.

The body of 48 year Abdi Rasheed Kaaheen Shire was discovered at the flat at 9.20am yesterday.

Gardaí say a post mortem examination has been completed but "for operational reasons" they are not releasing details.

The deceased is a Somali National and had lived in the Waterford City area.

Mr Shire was not living in the apartment but may have been visiting the area.

Sources say he was spotted in the company of another man in the hours leading up to his death.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for information, in particular they are appealing to members of the local and extended Somali community who may be in a position to assist with this investigation  to contact the Gardaí at Waterford on 051- 305300, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
