A man, described as two metres (6ft) in height and of strong build, attempted to rob a service station on Bantry quays shortly before 9.30pm on Wednesday evening.

However, the man was apparently disturbed by a customer arriving at the outlet and fled.

He had threatened the sole staff attendant with a knife before making his getaway on foot.

It is suspected the man had a car parked nearby.

No-one was injured in the incident though the worker was described as quite shocked.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have seen suspicious activity on Bantry's quays or a vehicle leaving the town at speed to contact them.

CCTV security cameras from the area are now being studied.

The raider was described as of stocky build and was wearing red hoodie-type top with the hoodie pulled up, grey slacks, a white scarf and black trainers.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bantry gardaí on (027) 20860
