A man has been arrested by gardai investigating the theft of overhead ESB cable.
Gardai from Portlaoise carried out a number of planned searches on Monday morning in the Leixlip area of Kildare.
During the raids a number of items were seized for examination and a male in his 40’s was arrested.
The man, a Romanian national, was brought to Portlaoise Garda Station where he was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
He was released without charge on Tuesday night and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Gardai from the Portlaoise and Kilkenny Detective Units, National Support Services, Eastern Regional RSU and local units were all involved in the searches of three properties.
Last year the ESB said one person had died and three people were seriously injured while trying to steal highly-valuable copper cables from its live network around the country.
The State electricity company said it has cost €27m to repair lines after the theft of cable with a value of €2m-€3m in the two years up to September 2015.
