A man has been shot in the legs in a park in front of children who were playing there.

The victim, who has been named locally as Tiernan Stokes (24), was being treated at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin last night for non-life threatening injuries after he was targeted in Bray, Co Wicklow.

Emergency services were alerted to the shooting incident in the People’s Park at around 5.30pm.

Sources say that Mr Stokes has not yet given gardai a statement and it is believed that he was shot twice in the legs by a gunman who was armed with a shotgun.

Officers are probing whether the shooting was organised by a notorious local gang whose leader is a convicted killer.

Sources say that he has been threatened by this gang in recent weeks.

Mr Stokes, from Oldcourt Avenue in Bray, has a number of previous convictions, including at least one for assault, and four thefts.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by detectives based in Bray and there has been no arrest so far.

Local Sinn Fein councillor John Brady described the shooting as a “despicable act”.

“There were a number of football games on when the incident happened and the area was full of young people,” he told the Herald.

“It’s a despicable act, completely uncalled for and one I totally condemn.”
