A man had to be rescued from the water last night after he accidentally cycled into the Grand Canal in Dublin.

The unusual incident happened at a lock at Leeson Street.

There are cycle lanes running close to the canal at the location and it is not fully understood how the man ended up in the water, but a fire brigade spokesman said it was accidental.

Two fire tenders,  as well as an ambulance, from Dolphin's Barn, Tara Street, and Donnybrook, attended the scene and pulled the man from the deep lock.

He was taken to hospital but his injuries were not believed to be serious.
