Man hospitalised after he was trapped under a large refrigerator

A man was hospitalised after being trapped under a large refrigerator.

The incident happened at Wilmer Road in Birr, Co Offaly yesterday at around 2.30pm as the man was assisting in the removal of a large fridge from a commercial premises.

It's understood the man, who is in his early 50s, was transferring the fridge to a vehicle when it fell on him.

Firemen had to use hydraulic lifting equipment to free the man, who is believed to have suffered crush injuries to his pelvis and chest.

Once the fridge was removed, the man who is understood to be from Northern Ireland, was taken by ambulance to the Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore.

Gardai diverted traffic as the incident was being dealt with. Gardai in Birr said the man had been taken to hospital in Tullamore but his condition was unknown on Thursday evening.

A Health and Safety Authority(HSA) spokesman confirmed an investigation has been launched into the matter.
