Man fighting for life after serious assault in town centre
A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a serious assault in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The 40-year-old and discovered "unresponsive" on Main Street in Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim at 4am.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and the injured man was brought to Sligo University Hospital. His condition is described as critical and a friend said he has since been transferred to the specialist head unit at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin
In a statement gardaí said: "The incident occurred before 4am when the injured party was in an altercation with a group of people - both male and female - on the footpath on the Main St.
"It (the altercation) then continued onto the road."
Gardaí have interviewed a number of witnesses and viewed CCTV covering the area.
They have appealed for any taxi drivers who were in the area at the time to contact them.
A friend of the victim described him as "one of the nicest lads you could meet".
She appealed for members of the public to help gardaí so the "scum can be caught for what they done".
Gardaí in Carrick on Shannon are appealing for witnesses in particular anyone who may have picked up a group of people around 4am in that area of the town or anyone with any information to contact them on 071 9650510, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
