A man has been arrested in Derry as part of a human trafficking investigation.

An Eastern European woman aged 26 is being treated for a range of injuries following allegations of rape and assault and is being assessed as a potential trafficking victim, PSNI detective inspector Mark Bell said.

DI Bell added: "A woman asked police at Strand Road for assistance last night and our inquiries led us to arrest a 28-year-old man a short time later.

"These inquiries, including a search of a property in the city, are continuing as we work with partner agencies to ensure the woman receives all appropriate support and assistance."
