A man has been arrested by gardai investigating the serious sexual assault of a teenage girl (17) in Cork.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested by gardai earlier today.

He was is being held at Mallow Garda Station under Section  4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The victim was dragged to a green area just 500 yards from the church in Charleville, Cork, and subjected to a violent rape in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

The young woman had been socialising earlier in the night in the town and was walking home alone at around 3.30am, when a man began walking behind her and started engaging her in conversation.

It is understood that the man then dragged the young woman to the green area and subjected her to what a garda source described as “a most violent” rape.

The young woman’s mother and another family member became concerned when she had not come home and began walking into town when they met the 17 year-old in a highly distressed state.

Gardai from Charleville were called and immediately launched an investigation.
