Man arrested and loaded handgun recovered minutes after shop raid
Uniform gardaí praised for quick response and 'significant capture'
A man has been arrested and a loaded handgun recovered after an armed raid on a shop in Dublin this evening.
Independent.ie has learned that the suspect entered the store on Thorncastle Street in Ringsend shortly before 6pm where he threatened staff and demanded cash.
He was wearing a balaclava and armed with a handgun.
Two gardaí, who were in a patrol car nearby, received a call to attend the scene.
Upon arrival they spotted the raider drop his weapon and run into nearby flats. He was arrested a short time later and a loaded handgun was recovered.
Gardaí also recovered a quantity of cash.
A source said a number of bullets were found in the man's pockets.
A garda spokesperson said a man in his mid 50s was arrested he is currently being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Irishtown garda station.
He can be held for up to three days.
A senior source said it was a "significant capture".
"These two officers were unarmed and they were on the scene within minutes of the incident. This was an extremely tense situation and they handled it professionally."
