Man (80s) killed when his car left road and crashed into tree

A man in his 80s has been killed when the car he was driving left the road and hit a tree.

The incident occurred at Ballydoogan, Co Galway at approximately 4.10pm this afternoon.

The elderly man was fatally injured when his car left the N65 Loughrea to Portumna Road.

He was the sole occupant of the car which crashed just past the junction with the Loughrea to Ballinasloe Rd.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

This stretch of road is currently closed pending the completion of an examination by forensics and diversions are in place.

Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091-842870, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
