The 73-year-old, the sole occupant of the car, suffered fatal injuries when his vehicle left the road and collided with a ditch at Knockyrourke, Stuake outside Macroom shortly before 9am.

No other vehicle was involved.

A passing motorist raised the alarm and both Gardai and paramedics raced to the accident scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His remains were transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where a full post mortem examination will take place.

One of the theories being examined by Gardai is whether the driver may have been taken ill in the seconds before the accident.

Driving conditions at the time were described as quite good.

Gardai said the man’s identity will not be confirmed until all relatives have been informed.

An examination of the scene was conducted by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Macroom Gardai have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision of the vehicle involved in the minutes before the accident to contact them at (026) 20590.
