Man (71) dies in fatal road collision while cycling with friends

A 71-year-old cyclist has died in a fatal road collision in Co Cork.

The man was out cycling with a group of colleagues when he came off his bicycle and struck the ground.

The incident occurred on the Castletownbere to Ardgroom Rd yesterday afternoon at approximately 4.40pm

The man's friends administered CPR until a local doctor attended the scene.

The doctor pronounced the man dead a short time later and his body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.

No one else was reported injured in the incident.

The road was closed to facilitate a Garda Forensic Collision examination and has since reopened.

 Gardaí are appealling for witnesses to the collision to contact them at Castletownbere Garda Station on 027 70002, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
