Man (60s) killed in lunchtime car crash in Laois
A man has been killed in a road crash in Co Laois earlier today.
The incident happened at the junction to Clonaghadoo which is located 6km outside of the town of Mountmellick on the N80 just after midday.
The accident happened as a car went to turn into the Clonaghadoo junction and the car driven by the deceased man went to overtake on the junction.
The deceased is a local man in his 60's from the Portlaoise area.
His body has been taken to Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise where a post mortem is to be arranged.
Locals who attended the scene of the accident described the car as "somersaulting" into the air before landing in a field.
One local Laois man described the accident as horrific.
"It's the fourth person to die at this spot in the past number of years," he said.
The driver of the other car, a woman in her late 20s, was treated at the scene for shock with no serious injuries.
She was removed to Tullamore Hospital for a medical examination.
The local parish priest in Mountmellick, Fr Micheal Murphy attended the scene of the crash on Tuesday.
"It's an awful tragedy to hit the Parish," said Fr Murphy.
The road has since reopened following a technical examination by the Gardai
