An estimated €450,000 worth of cannabis was seized in Cork after a joint Customs and Garda operation.

The operation, which was mounted following receipt of specific intelligence about cannabis supply in the Munster area, was carried out by Customs & Excise officers as well as by Gardaí from the National Organised Crime Bureau and Cork Divisional Drug Unit.

A property in Glanmire on the outskirts of Cork city was searched and approximately 33kg of cannabis was found.

The drugs have an estimated street value of €450,000.

Following the seizure a 50-year-old man was arrested.

He was taken to Mayfield Garda Station where he is being questioned under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice-Drug Trafficking Act, 1996.

The man can be detained for an initial period of 24 hours.

Garda technical experts are conducting a detailed examination of the property and Garda sources stressed that further arrests may yet be made.

The Revenue Commissioners urged anyone with information about drug smuggling to contact their confidential freephone number 1800 295 295.
