A man has died following an explosion in Co Tipperary this afternoon.

It is understood that the workplace accident occurred near Nenagh on the old N7 Limerick to Dublin road shortly after 4pm.

The man in his late 40s was fatally injured while working at a gas pipe construction site adjacent to the N7.

A spokesperson for Gas Networks Ireland confirmed that the incident did not involve natural gas as none would have been present in the pipes until construction was complete.

Some sources at the scene have reported that the man may have mistakenly cut through a pressurised air pipe.

Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have launched two separate investigations into the incident.

Further details about the deceased will not be released by authorities until all next of kin are informed.

Diversions are in place on and leading to the old N7 road as forensic examination of the scene is ongoing.

More to follow.
