Man (30s) 'suffered stab wounds' in fatal house assault in early hours

A man in his 30s has died following an assault at a house in Co Galway on Sunday morning.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the incident which occurred at a house on Cardinal Cushing Road, Mervue at around 4am.

The man suffered apparent stab wounds in the attack.

He received medical assistance at the scene before being taken to University Hospital Galway where he was later pronounced dead.

A post mortem is to be arranged.

A man in his mid 60s was arrested at the scene.

He is currently detained at Galway Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The scene is preserved for technical examination and The State Pathologist's Office has been notified.
