Lucky family stored Lotto ticket worth €6.1 million in gun cabinet - 'I could think of no better place'
A thrilled family stored a Lotto ticket worth €6.1 million with their guns for safety.
The delighted winners - who want to remain anonymous - revealed the day they bought the golden ticket was extra special as it was also when their first grandchild was born.
The family of six were one of two winners of Saturday's €12.3 million jackpot and collected their half of the fortune today.
The father said he has been playing the Lotto every week since it started 30 years ago and purchased his winning ticket at the Topaz Service Station on the Dublin Road in Athlone, Co Westmeath last week.
He said that when he saw his numbers has been picked he knew the perfect place for the precious ticket was their gun cabinet.
He said: "Sure I could think of no better place to leave it!
"I dared hope it was us, but when we checked the winning numbers we realised our dreams had come true. We were over the moon."
He said he called his wife who was in work and told her they'd netted €500.
He explained: "If I had told her the truth all of her work would known! She asked me to be sure to buy a bottle of wine to have with dinner."
His stunned wife said: "I couldn’t believe it when I got home to learn that we had hit the Jackpot! The excitement was something else."
She said they've decided each family member will receive just over €1 million, adding it's a "a lovely amount which will help the kids out with their mortgages and to get a great start in life."
Despite winning the incredible amount of money, the couple ruled out quitting work.
He said: "We both love our jobs and we will be carrying on as normal."
The second winning ticket from Saturday's jackpot was bought in Mickey Joe’s Country Store in Carrigart in Co. Donegal, they've contacted the National Lottery office and arrangements are being made to claim the prize.
Dermot Griffin, National Lottery Chief Executive, congratulated the lucky winners.
He said: "We are delighted for this Westmeath family who are sharing in a €6.1 million win.
"The Lotto is about making dreams come true and we wish them all the best of luck in the future."
