Key crime figure suspected of robberies on homes of elderly arrested

A senior criminal suspected of a series of raids on the homes of elderly has been arrested as part of a garda operation.

The 41-year-old was questioned by officers following a raid by the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau, officers from the Eastern Regionals Garda Division and the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) at 8pm in Co Meath.

He was with another man, believed to be a 31-year-old relative, in a stolen BMW that had been fitted with false plates when they were stopped in Rathfeigh.

in a statement gardaí said: "A 3 Ltr BMW stolen in the Dublin Region within the last week was recovered along with items suspected for use in the course of committing burglaries."

Gloves, a baseball bat and a key were also found in the car.

The gang has been targeted by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) which has seized more than €250,000 from the gang.

The arrested men were held in custody at Blackrock Garda Station, where they were detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and questioned throughout the night.

Both are due to appear before Dun Laoghaire District Court at 10.30am this morning charged with the Unauthorised Taking of a vehicle and theft related charges.
