A journalist has died after falling ill while playing a football game last night.

Carl O'Malley (36) was taking part in a game with colleagues at a sports complex in south Dublin when he suddenly fell ill.

An ambulance attended the scene, and Mr O'Malley was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death is not known.

The sports journalist is survived by his wife Moira and their three children - Charlie (6), Arwen (3) and one week old Leo.

The man had worked for the 'Irish Times' since 2001, and shocked colleagues received an email from the HR department this morning confirming the death and expressing sympathy with the man’s wife and young family.
