A small dog was rescued after it was tied to a five litre drum of water with four tie wraps around its collar and thrown into a canal.
Drogheda River Rescue and Recovery were called to the canal at Old Bridge in Drogheda on Tuesday morning after a member of the public heard barking from the trapped dog.
“I’ve never seen anything as bad as that in my 30 years as an animal rescuer. I’ve never seen an animal tied around its neck to a water drum,” said Alan Floyd from the Drogheda rescue group who saved the small Jack Russell from the canal.
“After ten minutes of searching for the dog, we found it at the back of the trees in the canal. He was growling at me and shivering from the cold,” said Alan.
The dog was brought to the vet for examination after the water drum was emptied and it was brought to safety.
“The dog has no injuries; he was just shocked and cold. He’s now with a foster home to see to see if he can be re-homed again. He has a very nice temperament.”
The Drogheda River Rescue and Recovery team have no idea where the dog came from but the dog is microchipped.
“We are receiving a lot of concern about the dog and what he looked like. He was a small Jack Russell, white with brown spots and two dark patches on his lower back, he was wearing a brown collar and he is micro chipped,” they said.
Anyone with information about the dog is asked to contact gardai in Drogheda.
