Irish-American man scoops an incredible $7 million on a scratch card
An Irish-American man can't believe his luck after winning an incredible $7 million (€6.30m) on a scratch card.
Mr Moriarty (56) has said that he plans to look after his family but joked the excitement of the win made him uncharacteristically late to meet his daughter.
The New York Lottery said that Mr Moriarty, who lives in the Bronx, won on a scratch-off Cash Blowout ticket and will be around $4.36m (€3.9m) better off after taxes and charges are deducted.
As he claimed his fortune, Mr Moriarty told Lotto chiefs about his life-changing moment.
He said: "I dropped off my laundry down the street and decided to stop into the gift shop and buy a Lottery ticket.
"I never played this ticket before so I was shocked when I realized I won the jackpot.
"I am a very punctual person and I had plans to meet my daughter. Scratching off the ticket made me two minutes late meeting her!"
The bar man also stressed that family will come first when it comes to the cash.
He said: "I honestly have no clue what I will do with the winnings. To start, I’ll take care of my family. I’ll have to think about what I’ll do after that."
