A 25-year-old Irish woman who was attacked and beaten with a motorcycle chain lock in a savage attack in France has been released from hospital.

According to a local French newspaper, three men attacked the woman in the southern French town of Avignon as she returned to her accommodation in the centre of the town at around 6.30am yesterday morning.

The woman was pushed and hit with the chain and was hospitalised following the incident, according to local French media.

She suffered serious injuries to the mouth, cheeks and nose, police said.

"She is in a state of shock," a police source told Le Dauphiné Libéré newspaper.

According to the paper the men ran off after the attack, leaving the chain behind them on the Rue des Infirmières, where the young woman was staying.

The victim told police she did not know the identity of the attackers.

The paper reported that the woman was attacked for no apparent reason and that police are investigating the motive for the attack.

It is understood that the young woman has since been released from hospital.
