Irish girl (15) drowns in swimming pool at resort in Crete

A Wicklow teenager has drowned on the Greek island of Crete, according to local reports.

The parents of the young girl became concerned at approximately 2.30pm on Sunday when they could not locate her in the resort village Stalida.

According to local media cretapost.gr, they eventually discovered the 15-year-old floating in the swimming pool at their hotel.

Attempts were made to resuscitate the girl but and emergency services were called.

Paramedics and ambulance doctors also attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful.

Her body was removed to a local hospital where a post-mortem will take place.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance to the girl's family.

Further details about the young girl have not been released.

Stalida, also know as Stalis, is a beach resort midway between Malia and Hersonissos. It is a popular resort for Irish holidaymakers.
