NUI, Galway economics professor Alan Ahearne has been appointed as an external advisor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Prof Ahearne, who is head of economics at the Galway university, will advise IMF senior management on how it could better support the efforts of countries at all levels of income to boost growth and create jobs. He will retain his post in the university.
THE West North-West Hospital Group's Patient Council is to hold its first meeting in September.
The 10-member council will assist management in assessing the current quality of service as well as review policies and procedures. The council will be led by Colette Cowan, chief director of nursing and midwifery.

THE remains of a German motorcyclist, who died in a road accident in Mayo over the weekend, are to be repatriated back to her home country.
Gudrun Kornmesser (54) was holidaying in Ireland as part of a group of motorcycle enthusiasts when she was killed in a road accident at Bellacorrick on Saturday.
