Houses evacuated as 'viable' bomb found in home in early hours

A bomb was found at a home in Kildare in the early hours of this morning.

An army disposal team was dispatched to the residence in the Bothar Bui area of Athy at approximately 130am.

The explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team were deployed by the Defence Forces to handle the viable device.

The improvised explosive device was rendered safe without the need for a controlled explosion.

Throughout the incdient, a cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety and a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The device was then taken to a secure military location for further examination where it was confirmed as viable.

The scene was declared safe at 3 am.

An investigation has been launched and evidence will be handed over to the gardai.
