Heroic garda confronts and captures hammer-welding thief after chase through city

An off duty garda gave chase and captured a thief armed with a hammer who had just threatened staff and robbed a pharmacy in Dublin.

At around 10.50am yesterday morning a man, aged in his 40s, armed with a hammer entered a pharmacy on Eden Quay.

The man  threatened staff and demanded money. After taking a sum of money, the man fled the scene.

An off duty garda noticed the man running out of the shop and gave chase. After a pursuit through the city, the off-duty garda caught up with the man at Custom House Quay in Dublin.

Gardai from Store Street arrested the man and the money stolen from the shop was recovered.

The man, who is aged in his late 40s, is due to appear in court tomorrow.
