Heavily armed gardai swoop on four people following 'campaign of terror' against businessman's family
Heavily armed gardai have swooped on four people in connection with an investigation into a campaign of a terror against a businessman during which a relative was allegedly kidnapped.
The group were attempting to extort money from the innocent entrepreneur by claiming to be working for a feared criminal in the Co Wexford area.
Two men - aged 25 and 33 years - and two women - aged 31 and 48 years - were arrested in Gorey and Enniscorthy at approximately 8.30am this morning.
Local gardai required the assistance of elite members of the South-Eastern Regional Armed Support Unit due to the seriousness of the alleged offences.
The four were arrested as part of the investigation into false imprisonment, blackmail and criminal damage incidents that occurred in Gorey between January 25 and February 3.
In one incident the businessman’s son was allegedly held against his will in a car while in a separate attack the young man was struck several times with a crowbar.
Three of those arrested, the two men and one of the woman, are currently detained at Enniscorthy and Wexford Garda stations under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939-'98 as amended.
The 48-year-old woman, who was detained at Gorey Garda Station, was released this evening from Garda custody without charge.
A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
