Government approves draft legislation on Eircodes postcode system
The government has approved draft legislation on the Eircodes postcode system, which will be introduced later this year.
The move was confirmed by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White.
“I will be introducing a short piece of legislation, which will underpin existing measures and commitments to ensure that the use of postcodes will be fully compliant with data protection requirements set down in legislation,” he said.
He said that there has been “ongoing dialogue” between the Department of Communications and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
The Data Protection Commissioner has advised that the postcode project should be underpinned by its own data protection legislation to ensure that personal data is fully protected in the implementation and licencing of the system.
