Pilgrims and adventure racers were set to come head to head on Croagh Patrick this weekend as Gaelforce's annual race coincided with one of the holiest days for worshippers.

Saturday, the Feast of the Assumption, is one of three holy days of pilgrimage on the mountain, but inadvertently Gaelforce - which has 1,400 competitors running, kayaking and cycling - was also planned.

While traditionally around 300 to 700 pilgrims attend the August 15 climb, organisers believe that number could increase significantly as a result of the Reek Sunday pilgrimage being cancelled this year.

Both events will go ahead after start times were changed.
